1. If you want to make the most out of your pastels, you have to hold them in a particular way. It is recommended that you hold them not unlike pencils, as this will allow you a greater sense of range in the long term. Let's say that you want to create thinner lines while going about pastel artistry; a lighter grip, as well as application, will be required. Make sure that you use your entire arm so that you have as much range on the matter as possible.
2. Understand which pastels are best when they are mixed together. This is where I feel as though painting is an easier endeavor, since you will be able to mix colors rather easily before applying them to the canvas in front of you. Pastels, on the other hand, have to be applied directly on the surface but I am of the opinion that this has the potential to create a litany of moods as a result. For more comprehensive blending, on your part, make sure that you have a tissue or cotton swab on hand.
3. I am of the opinion that the surface used for pastel artistry matters tremendously. This is especially true, seeing as how pastels usually do not bode well when it comes to the surfaces that feel smoother to the touch. Seeing as how said surfaces do not hold pastels well, it is recommended that slightly rougher textures are put to use instead. To say that this can change the landscape of whatever it is that you are trying to create would be nothing short of an understatement.
These tips should be able to give you a better understanding of what is needed, from you, as far as coloring with pastels is concerned. It's an enjoyable endeavor for any artist to get into but, as you can see, there are a couple of tips to make this easier on your part. Not only do you have to consider the actual materials which are put to use but the surfaces as well. The elements in question will only help to make your pastel artistry stand out.
